In this online CPD, approved by the CPD Certification Service, you will gain introductory knowledge and understanding of how metal roofing and cladding systems contribute to sustainable and durable building design. CPD points are awarded on completion of an online questionnaire at the end.

You will start by learning about the global and UK policy context, including climate change commitments, net zero targets, and the need for reduced carbon emissions in construction. The document also explains how the building envelope plays a key role in achieving energy efficiency, waste reduction and long-term environmental performance.

The guidance document advocates a “fabric-first” approach, focusing on the performance of the building envelope itself, particularly durability, maintenance and lifecycle performance. It introduces key sustainability tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and rating systems like BREEAM and LEED, which help measure and verify environmental impact.

A key area of the guidance is explaining the different types of metal roofing and cladding systems, including sandwich panels, single-skin sheets, built-up systems, and rainscreen cladding, and how they can be designed for thermal, acoustic and fire performance. It also highlights the advantages of metals such as steel and aluminium, including high recyclability and long service life.

Finally, the document reviews additional sustainable enhancements such as photovoltaic systems, green roofs, and cool roof technologies, alongside the certifications, standards, and quality systems that underpin responsible sourcing and product performance.
