This online CPD, approved by the CPD Certification Service, provides a comprehensive technical guide to the selection, design, performance and installation of fasteners used in metal roofing and wall cladding systems. It emphasises that fasteners are critical structural components within the building envelope, responsible for securing cladding to the supporting structure and transferring loads safely. CPD points are awarded on completion of an online questionnaire at the end.

The CPD explains different fastener types, including primary and secondary fasteners, self-drilling and self-tapping screws, and alternative systems such as rivets, grommets and anchors. It details how each type functions and where it should be used within various cladding systems, such as single-skin sheets, built-up systems, composite panels, secret-fix roofs and rainscreen façades.

A key focus is on performance criteria, covering durability, weathertightness, aesthetics and structural behaviour. Guidance is provided on selecting appropriate materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium) based on environmental exposure, including corrosive or coastal conditions. The document also explains important structural considerations such as pull-out and pull-over resistance, shear strength and correct installation to avoid failure.

In addition, the CPD addresses detailing issues such as fastener spacing, thermal movement, compatibility of materials and special conditions like firewalls or swimming pools. Finally, it highlights the importance of correct tooling and installation practices to ensure long-term performance and compliance with design requirements.
