A contractor that was impressed with Laidlaw’s professionalism called on the company again to manufacture and install a handrail and balustrade at one of the UK’s oldest public schools.

Laidlaw is a market leader of premium bespoke handrails and balustrade systems and a trusted name among architectural suppliers and contractors.

When building and civil engineering contractor Stepnell was appointed to lead the new build at Ruthin School in Denbighshire, Wales, it specified a Laidlaw handrail and balustrade to be included in the £1.8m new accommodation block.

Laidlaw Project Manager and Surveyor Lee Thompson said that with dozens of students using the stairwells everyday – several times a day – it was necessary to select a robust and durable product that could withstand heavy and constant use.

Working with Stepnell, the Laidlaw team recommended its 5mm thick polyester-powder coated (PPC) slatted infills in pure white – one of its newest products. These complemented the sleek and modern timber handrail, which comprised 40mm brushed stainless steel and oak combination balustrades. It was completed with concrete fixings, which achieve a 0.74kn category loading.

“For a school environment it made sense to choose a handrail and balustrade that has long life expectancy and is low maintenance,” said Lee.

“This was one of the first times we had manufactured and supplied our fully compliant slatted infill panels and they work exceedingly well in this internal stairwell. This is a fresh, new look that will suit many locations and the panels can be powder-coated to match corporate colour schemes.

“We were delighted that Stepnell was keen to work with us again and we look forward to collaborating on future schemes.”

Laidlaw provides an end-to-end service, from initial site survey to installation, guaranteeing clients a full package of technical expertise and support services.

“Offering this one-stop service means that we are in the very best position to advise specifiers, create bespoke solutions and products if they are required, and turn around requests quickly,” said Lee.

Mark Darler, site manager of Stepnell Ltd, said this latest project confirmed Laidlaw’s professionalism and dependability.

“Stepnell contacted Laidlaw directly to deliver the scheme because of the high quality of their systems, the professionalism of their installation teams and the aftercare service we receive,” he said.

“Following the completion of another successful project together, I would not hesitate in recommending Laidlaw to prospective clients and I look forward to working with them again in the future.”
