Funding secured for affordable homes in the North East

North East based developer Galliford Try Partnerships North has secured over £11.5million towards the construction of hundreds of high quality, affordable homes in the region over the next three years.

Working in partnership with local authorities and registered housing providers it has identified communities in North and South Tyneside, Sunderland, County Durham and Teesside in need of additional affordable homes, which will be constructed in consultation with local planning authorities.

The Affordable Homes Programme (AHP) grant, from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), accounts for well over half the £20 million awarded to Galliford Try nationally.

The programme aims to increase the number of affordable properties in England by investing £1.7 billion in new homes.  Developers, such as Galliford Try Partnerships North, registered providers and councils from all over the UK were invited to bid for a share of this investment, which it is hoped will see the construction of 165,000 new homes outside London.

Stephen McCoy, Managing Director with Galliford Try Partnerships North said: “We are delighted to be bringing a large portion of this funding to the North East and it is testament to our teams’ commitment, drive, knowledge and experience that we have been successful with these bids.

“These new projects will deliver much needed sustainable and affordable homes to the region.”

Andy Rose, Chief Executive of the HCA, said: “We have set in place a solid delivery programme that will ensure a smooth transition from our current affordable homes programme and that delivery can start promptly.

“Just over half of the available funding has been allocated. The remaining funding will be allocated on a continuous market engagement basis, giving even more partners time to work up deliverable bids to meet local needs and their future development aspirations.”
