A coordinated approach to cavity tray design

As the performance requirements for masonry external walls have become more demanding, cavity trays are becoming an important consideration during specification. For relevant buildings, selecting cavity tray systems that have been tested as complete pre-formed sections can help provide greater confidence when specifying for buildings subject to Regulation 7(2) requirements.

Siderise CT Cavity Tray was originally developed specifically for this purpose. Having supported compliant masonry wall designs across the UK for the past five years, the system provides specifiers with a tested and reliable solution for brickwork projects.

The pre-formed tray incorporates a flexible aluminium tray with an integral stone wool core. Rather than relying on the standalone reaction to fire performance of the individual component materials, Siderise CT Cavity Tray achieves an A2-s1, d0 classification to EN 13501-1 that includes the integral DPM flashing.

The system has also undergone BBA testing and certification covering joint water tightness, mortar adhesion, material durability and installation practicability, and can comply with the technical requirements of major warranty providers such as NHBC, Premier Guarantee and LABC. Moreover, the insulation-filled triangular prism design can help maintain thermal continuity within the cavity.

During the design stage, DWG dynamic CAD blocks with built-in parameters make it easier to improve the accuracy and efficiency of detailing processes and to further support specification confidence, the product has also achieved CCPI Assessed status, providing assurance that published product information is clear, accurate, accessible and maintained under robust governance.

Traditional cavity trays commonly need to accommodate for complex areas such as external corners or window openings, which can present difficulties when using rigid metal trays. With Siderise CT Cavity Tray, the pre-formed section can be cut to suit the required angle, with joints sealed using specially formulated foil sealing tape.

As part of the wider Siderise passive fire protection portfolio, CT Cavity Tray can be specified alongside Siderise EW cavity barriers and firestops. Compatible ancillaries include DPM seals, aluminium jointing tape and stainless-steel cavity tray stops for window head and reveal details. These components have also been tested as part of the BBA certified system.

The system removes the need for onsite fabrication, additional insulation or sealant application. Installation requires only a cutting knife / saw, marker pen and tape measure for tools, helping reduce labour demands and support programme certainty, particularly on larger multi-storey projects where multiple trades are working within shared access arrangements.
