Leading window, door and curtain walling designer, manufacturer and installer, CMS Window Systems, has secured the contract to provide glazing solutions for the redevelopment of the ferry terminal at Brodick Harbour on the Isle of Arran.

CMS’s contract comprises the fabrication and installation of over 600m2 of Metal Technology curtain walling for the terminal building, along with doors and an internal screen system.

This is part of a £22.2m project for client Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), which aims to maintain and enhance the vital ferry services between the island of Arran and mainland Scotland, providing solutions which will endure for at least the next 60 years. Led by civil engineering contractor George Leslie Ltd., the redevelopment project includes a new pier, an increased marshalling area through reclaimed land, and a modern terminal building with bus stances and extensive parking facilities.

CMS’s glazing specification for the project prioritises environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. The terminal building will benefit from a highly thermally insulating building envelope achieved by CMS through combining low U-value IGUs with 634m2 of Metal Technology’s System 17 curtain walling system.

The company’s emphasis on energy saving and sustainability is also evident in the products chosen for the building’s entrances and exits. Doors from Metal Technology’s System 5 and System 9 will be installed internally and externally, in addition to a three-leaf manual revolving door at the building’s main entrance.

Work began on the project early in the new year, and completion of the development is expected in mid-2017. CMS Aluminium Director, Stephen Anderson, said: “We’re really pleased to be a part of the Brodick Harbour redevelopment project. The ferry service is a fundamental part of the lives of Arran residents - the upgrade work will modernise and transform the original site into a truly cutting-edge facility which will provide an improved experience for the passengers who use it. CMS is proud to play a part in bringing these changes to the island.”

CMAL’s Head of Civil Engineering, Ramsay Muirhead, said: “The ferry terminal infrastructure at Brodick is now nearing the end of its serviceable life and the project will see the harbour transformed. The new terminal building will improve the passenger experience."
