A group of young women from Paignton Community College learned more about potential careers in the construction industry at an event hosted by Leadbitter Group and Sovereign Housing Association last week
The Women in Construction event, held at Beechfield Avenue in Torquay, where Leadbitter is constructing 144 new homes on behalf of Sovereign, was designed to give the young women insight into the range of careers available in construction and show that it is no longer a male-dominated field
The 11 visitors, all in year nine at the College, got the full flavour of life on a construction site, beginning with a full health and safety induction provided by Senior Site Manager Steve Tinney. After donning hard hats, high-visibility vests and gloves, they were given a tour of the site and had an opportunity to try their skills at bricklaying with the assistance of professionals from S R Gresham
Apprentices Martyn Gebhard and Daniel Samways were also on hand, giving the young women an opportunity to learn more about apprenticeships from two young people who are currently benefiting from them. The event closed with a question and answer session where the young women were able to ask about the various jobs they had seen in action on the site
Sarah Griffin, Regional Head of Development for the Sovereign Housing Association, said: “I was really keen to support the ‘Women in Construction’ event, because I want women to realize that there is a place for them in this industry.
“There are challenges for a woman in a male-orientated industry, but as long as you act with professionalism, these can be overcome. There are certainly a lot more women in the construction sector these days. When I first became involved, there were very few female development managers, and even fewer surveyors, architects and engineers. It’s certainly not unusual now.”
Jackie Kelly, Community Engagement Coordinator for Leadbitter’s West and Wales Housing division, said: “Leadbitter is committed to nurturing tomorrow’s construction talent and part of that commitment is making sure that young people—both female and male—considering their future careers are aware of the variety of options that our industry offers. There truly is something for everyone, whether you’re good at maths, enjoy drawing or like working with your hands, and there are excellent opportunities for young women in all areas of the industry.”
