SAINT-GOBAIN HELPS TO CREATE IDEAL HOMES

Leading international construction materials company Saint-Gobain is playing a key role in the creation of two properties set to take centre stage in the Show Home Village at this year’s Ideal Home Show, which takes place at Earls Court from 16 March – 1 April.

Set to be the main attraction at the exhibition, the Show Home Village will feature three life sized show homes. Saint-Gobain Isover, British Gypsum and Saint-Gobain Weber have supplied materials and technical support to assist with the construction of two of the properties: The Prince’s Arts & Crafts House and the Santiago Town House.

Designed by The Prince’s Foundation, the Prince’s House is a revolutionary, low carbon eco-home built using the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship. It provides a stylish, comfortable and affordable low carbon alternative to some of the more complex designs being built today and demonstrates how a sustainable approach to homes and gardens can benefit local communities.

The Santiago Town House will be the first four storey home to be built within the Show Homes Village in the Ideal Home Show’s history. Drawing inspiration from classic Regency and Georgian terrace properties, the design won the ‘Future Homes’ category of the British Home Awards 2011.

Currently being built off-site by specialist manufacturer Tingdene Homes and energy services installer Mark Group, the properties will be transported to Earl’s Court in modules. They will be reassembled in the exhibition hall, with the finishing touches added ready for the opening of the Ideal Home Show.

Both properties are designed to meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. They will be constructed using the FutureForm Building System®, meaning that, when constructed for site situations, the units can be tested for thermal performance and air tightness before leaving the factory to ensure they meet the required standards.

Two layers of Saint-Gobain Isover’s Timber Frame Batt 35 100mm glass mineral wool slab will be used between the external frame in both properties, providing thermal and acoustic insulation to help meet Part L and Section 6 (Scotland) regulations. The company’s 50mm Acoustic Partition Roll (APR1200) will also be used to provide high levels of acoustic insulation within the internal partitions to meet Part E requirements.

A range of British Gypsum’s Gyproc plasterboard will also be used throughout the properties. This includes WallBoard for the internal walls and FireLine, which will give increased fire protection in the external walls and ceilings while offering protection to the steel frame structure. Gyproc Moisture Resistant, which has water repellent additives in the core and paper liners, will be used in the kitchen and bathroom areas.

Both homes will also feature weber.rend MT, a high-performance, multi-coat render system. The specialist render, weber.rend LAC, will be applied off-site with a reinforcing fabric mesh incorporated within the base coat. Once the modules are reassembled at the Ideal Home Show the installation will be completed with a layer of weber.plast TF used to give a decorative, textured finish. For the required Code 4 level on site, a Saint-Gobain Weber External Wall Insulation system will be incorporated with the same rendered finish as the Show Homes.

Lindsey Walker, strategic marketing leader for Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland comments: “These modular buildings will demonstrate how sustainability can be achieved affordably, comfortably and stylishly. Working in partnership with Tingdene Homes and Mark Group we have provided solutions and expertise to help transform these concepts into reality, creating homes with real character to meet the challenges we face as a society in terms of housing and energy efficiency.”
