Born To Build aims to entice more young people into construction

A new social media campaign “Born To Build” has been launched to entice more young people to take a look at the career opportunities in construction.

At the heart of the campaign is a variety of young people telling their own story about how they got into the industry, their ambitions and what excites them about the world of construction.  Their stories are being supplemented by straightforward and practical career advice.

There will also be an opportunity for young people to engage in dialogue with those already working in the industry to get the best insight into the world of construction.

The campaign is being delivered by UKCG and its members supported by CITB and in partnership with CIOB, the Considerate Constructors Scheme and Scottish Contractors Group.

Speaking about the campaign UKCG’s Director Stephen Ratcliffe said: “Attracting and retaining talent is the construction industry’s biggest challenge today.

"The sector needs to recruit 182,000 new workers over the next five years if we are to deliver forecast sector growth and the resulting benefits to the UK economy. And we have to compete with an array of great career opportunities in other sectors of the economy.  So the construction industry needs to shout louder about what we can offer.  This is what our campaign will do.”

Primarily a social media campaign (using YouTube and twitter) targeted at young people between the ages of 14 and 19, ‘Born To Build’ aims to challenge outdated perceptions of what is a dynamic, exciting industry at the forefront of technological innovation.

Part of UKCG’s wider Open Doors Weekend initiative, it aims to provide an opportunity for young people to find out more about the range of career choices within construction and to hear directly from those already enjoying successful careers in the industry.
