Imperial Tobacco achieves BREEAM Excellent with Pilkington Suncool

Imperial Tobacco’s new HQ has achieved a sustainability certification of Excellent from the world’s leading assessment method for sustainable buildings, BREEAM, with a helping hand from Pilkington Suncool 70/40.

The Bristol-based building utilises NSG Group’s latest developments in glazing technology. Produced to reduce solar heat gain, while also supplying a high degree of light transmission – and preventing heat loss in cold weather – Pilkington Suncool 70/40 is the perfect solution for environmental design.

Pilkington Suncool is a high performing range of off-line coated solar control and low-emissivity products. With the growing use of glass in architecture, Pilkington Suncool can help to reduce capital outlay and running costs, as well as the associated carbon emissions of a building the whole year round. The wide range of products is not only energy-efficient, but is available in a clear or neutral appearance, as well as in two distinctive colours; blue and silver.

Mark Alker Stone, AWW Architects’ Project Director for Imperial Tobacco HQ said, “We wanted to design with sustainability as a key driver in the overall form and technical approach and also support ITL’s business approach of a motivating work environment for its staff. Pilkington Suncool 70/40 solar control glass gave us the design freedom to do so. While designing a building with leading sustainability credentials, we were able to exploit the design aesthetics of glazing – and benefits of natural light.”

Pilkington Suncool is a range of superior solar control products with a wide range of visible light transmittance, reduced solar transmittance and excellent low-emissivity all in one superb product.

The excellent solar control properties of Pilkington Suncool can greatly reduce the need for air conditioning within a building, whilst its insulation properties can reduce heat loss to 1.0 W/m2K in a standard Insulating Glass Unit (6-16-6).

Now manufactured in the UK, so with less carbon footprint than before, Pilkington Suncool offers the ideal choice for providing maximum light transmission and thermal comfort for occupants all year round.
