Danfloor UK have received accreditation from RIBA for their CPD seminar on how carpet can help to create a therapeutic environment within care and mental health settings; looking specifically at many of the benefits carpet can bring to such environments.
Specifying materials for a therapeutic environment, such as a care home or mental health facility, requires great consideration. Appreciating the vulnerability of the occupants and their associated health needs means that finishing products can have a profound effect on their day to day living and independence.
One specific angle the seminar takes is the importance of acoustics. UK Building Regulations stipulate that a suitable floor covering should have a weighted reduction in impact sound pressure level of not less than 17 dB (decibel) when measured in accordance with EN ISO 140-8 and calculated in accordance with EN ISO 717-2. Carpets typically have a sound impact reduction in access of 28 dB and can therefore assist with creating an acoustically sound and therapeutic environment.
In addition to acoustics the presentation also examines indoor air quality, considered use of colours for the visually impaired and those living with dementia, how carpets can reduce injuries caused by trips and falls, that all important home from home feeling and the overall cost savings carpet can bring.
