Mitsubishi Electric increases flexibility on Ecodan R290 protection zones, making installations easier on site

Mitsubishi Electric has announced a major update to its Ecodan R290 air source heat pump range, placing a strong emphasis on greater flexibility around R290 protection zones to make installations simpler, clearer and more practical for installers—particularly on constrained and retrofit sites.

The changes reinforce Mitsubishi Electric’s position that Ecodan R290 is the future of low-carbon heating, while removing unnecessary barriers that installers have highlighted when working with flammable refrigerant systems.

Following a detailed technical and safety review, Mitsubishi Electric has lifted certain restrictions within the R290 protection zone that are no longer considered to pose a safety risk. As a result, the company has amended its Ecodan R290 ASHP Installation Manual to reflect this increased flexibility.

Previously, the protection zone restricted the presence of grooves and entrances into waste-water systems. These features are now explicitly permitted within the protection zone, including:

  • Grooves
  • Waste-water systems
  • Inlets in sewers and waste-water shafts
  • Downpipes

This update gives installers far greater freedom when siting outdoor units, helping to overcome common challenges on tight plots, terraced housing and retrofit projects, while maintaining safe installation practices.

The updated guidance now states that restrictions apply only to building openings or entrances to basements, such as windows, doors and ventilation openings (within 300mm from the base). This clarification removes ambiguity and provides installers with confidence when assessing site suitability.

Ecodan R290: Designed for real-world installations

Mitsubishi Electric’s move reflects its commitment to ensuring R290 systems are not only future-proof, but also installer-friendly. By reducing unnecessary siting limitations, Ecodan R290 installations can now be planned more efficiently, reducing redesigns, delays and aborted surveys.

To further support adoption, Mitsubishi Electric has also announced a £200 reduction on the list price of the Ecodan R290 5kW unit, making R290 an even more competitive option for smaller properties and retrofit installations.

Clear transition from R32

Installers are also reminded that Ecodan R32 is being phased out, with one year remaining before it is withdrawn from the range. Mitsubishi Electric is encouraging installers to transition fully to R290 systems now, ensuring future-proof installations aligned with tightening environmental regulations and refrigerant requirements.

R290 - specific installer training

To support safe and confident installation, Mitsubishi Electric continues to offer dedicated Ecodan R290 training. This training focuses on the specific handling requirements of the flammable R290 refrigerant and is delivered through a blended online and hands-on approach.

Training covers:

  • R290 system fundamentals
  • Mechanical and electrical installation
  • Commissioning procedures
  • Servicing and fault finding
  • Safe transportation, handling and maintenance

Courses are available via Mitsubishi Electric’s online learning platform and at its training centres, ensuring installers have access to the full skill set required.

Installer-led changes

Commenting on the update, Mitsubishi Electric’s Product Marketing Manager, Joanna Crown, said: “The Ecodan R290 is the next generation of heat pump technology, and we are committed to making the transition as straightforward as possible for installers and customers. By introducing greater flexibility around protection zones, investing in specialist training, and reducing the cost of entry with a lower price on the 5kW unit, we are removing barriers and giving the market confidence that the future of low-carbon heating is here now.”

Mitsubishi Electric will continue to work closely with installers and industry partners to ensure Ecodan R290 heat pump installations are practical, safe and commercially viable, supported by clear guidance, specialist training and competitive pricing.
