The SIG360 Technical Centre, a specialist offering by SIG Insulation in providing energy efficiency and building expertise for new build and retrofit projects, has provided cost saving solutions for a luxury residential development in Somerset.
Constructed by Bath-based property developer, Boss Development, the former doctors’ surgery in Chew Magna, North Somerset will be developed into seven high-end apartments.
Appointed to the project by Boss Development, SIG360 was tasked with ensuring the project met all of the thermal and acoustic requirements (Approved Document Part L and Part E) of the Building Regulations 2013.
To keep costs to a minimum, SIG360 was able to reduce the cavity wall insulation thickness from 90mm to 75mm by specifying higher performance cavity wall insulation that would still meet the required U-values.
The insulation experts were also able to recommend a cavity protection system for the insulation, removing the need for a backing block behind the building’s original stonework, saving costs while providing additional space.
To ensure the building meets Part E of the acoustic requirements, the technical experts specified Regupol acoustic flooring material to be installed below the screed.
Graham Kelly, General Manager at Boss Development said “The architect on our site recommended that we hire consultants to advise us on the thermal and acoustic elements of this project.
“A colleague mentioned that SIG Insulation provided this offering and, having worked with SIG for over 20 years, I contacted the team at the SIG360 Technical Centre, whose guidance has proved instrumental in helping us to develop our design in line with the Building Regulations.”
Speaking on the project, Andrew Orriss, Head of Business Development at SIG360 said “For residential projects such as this, keeping noise pollution to a minimum is extremely important for the comfort of residents.
“Thanks to the breadth of our product offering, we are able to offer unbiased product specification, allowing us to recommend the most suitable thermal and acoustic solutions that provide cost savings for the client without compromising on quality for future occupants. “
Once the building is complete in Summer 2016, the SIG360 Technical Centre will conduct air pressure and sound tests to ensure the development’s performance meets its thermal and acoustic expectations.
