Every once in a while a UK based company comes up with an innovation which totally turns accepted practice on its head, and which addresses not only the needs of the customer, but also the supply chain, offering high performance, value for money and buildability.
One such innovation is the pre-fabricated roofing system Smartroof. Representing a collaboration between timber systems specialist Wolf Systems and timber engineering manufacturer Wyckham Blackwell, Smartroof represents a major advancement for the off site sector and is creating quite an impact with contractors.
Smartroof is a patented panel system which is manufactured in factory conditions (allowing for reduced air leakage and improved insulation) which simply slots together on site, and for the very first time, spans from gable end to gable end. The product allows users to benefit from a highly insulative roofing system, which can be installed in just 1 day and allows for an instant and spacious room space. The system comes with a comprehensive back-up infrastructure to support every client's requirements.
Smartroof have recently completed their 2,000 contract, making them clear market leaders for panelised pre-fabricated roofing systems. David Himmons, Managing Director of Smartroof commented "It's great to see that the industry is waking up to the benefits of panelised roof systems. Despite the market being flat we are pleased to be achieving increased sales. Building Regs are becoming increasingly stringent with regard to thermal efficiency and Smartroof provides the ideal solution by providing panels that are preinstalled with high-performance insulation in factory conditions."
A Smartroof installation drew large crowds at this years Ecobuild, where it was installed on the Accord Housing Association stand. The full scale timber frame house was the tallest construction at the show raising the Smartroof to the ceiling!
The Smartroof system was also recently featured on Grand Designs (series 7, episode 15). The episode followed Alan and Judith Dawson in Cumbria as they built an Adaptahaus incorporating the Smartroof system. Despite having no architectural training, former blacksmith Alan successfully developed and built his own grand design, where the Smartroof system played an integral part.
