Over 250 litres of Johnstone’s Professional Gloss combined with 37 used shipping containers have helped to create a unique three-storey complex of fully-equipped office space in the North East.
Commissioned by the Sustainable Enterprise Strategies (SES) initiative to help stimulate business growth and employment across the region, the fascinating new SES Co-op Centre in Sunderland has been constructed using adapted shipping containers.
Appointed decorating contractors Cummings & Pattison (North East Ltd) worked closely with members of Johnstone’s specification team to identify the ideal products that would not only provide an attractive finish for this striking development but would also help to further prolong the life of the up-cycled shipping containers.
Ideal for use on metal surfaces, Johnstone’s Professional Gloss was used to paint the exterior of the containers to give a durable, high gloss finish. Other products from Johnstone’s extensive range were also used, with Johnstone’s Vinyl Soft Sheen and Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt emulsion, both of which are part of Johnstone’s Ecological Solutions range, applied to the interior walls and ceilings.
Ian Wilson from Cummings and Pattinson said: “We are extremely proud to have been involved in the SES Co-op centre project and without a doubt; it is one of the most unusual jobs we have worked on. As the development was created using old shipping containers, the contract provided a unique challenge for us and it was essential that the paints that were used both inside and out helped to further enhance and protect the centre. Within Johnstone’s range of products we found the solution to meet the requirements of each different substrate and the end result is a highly attractive yet durable paint scheme that is ideally suited for use in a busy office environment.”
Steve Waggett, Regional Manager for the North East at main contractor Clugston Construction, added: “This is a very unusual project and one that has attracted a great deal of attention in the local area. It was vital that every element of the construction process contributed to the success of the scheme and from the attractive external paint finish to the low-maintenance interior decoration, the use of Johnstone’s paints has proved to be the ideal choice.”
