Birse Civils, a Balfour Beatty brand, has been awarded the second phase of engineering works to facilitate the regeneration of Stockton High Street.
The improvement works are designed to provide a public space that will attract investment and business to the area, as well as improving the local environment for residents and visitors.
During the first phase of the scheme Birse Civils was appointed to realign the existing highway and introduce a bus turning facility and car parking area, in addition to the installation of new paving, street furniture and landscaping.
The £1.9 million of additional work will add a further 4000m2 of public realm paving to Stockton’s main shopping street, extending Birse Civil’s contract to November 2013.
The appointment maintains the well established partnership formed through early contractor involvement (ECI) on the first phase of the scheme and will dovetail into further packages that are due to be procured by Stockton Borough Council.
ECI enabled Birse Civils to bring its experience in identifying and proactively dealing with issues ahead of construction.
Benefits have included packaging the High Street project with the Council’s adjoining St John’s Crossing and Thornaby Footbridge schemes. This approach has delivered an estimated £1 million worth of savings by eliminating duplication in areas such as site set-up and exploiting synergies between material and recycling requirements.
