Partnership helps meet Government’s Green Deal

Leicester College has partnered with Well Warm insulations, a Leicester-based company, with over a decade of experience in the loft and cavity wall insulation field.

Well Warm is supplying the grants from government agencies available to many homeowners, working with energy companies and a team of professional surveyors and installers to improve the energy efficiency of your home in line with the Green Deal.

Existing Well Warm tradesmen and Plastering learners at Leicester College are being taught the latest techniques in home insulation by Weber assessors, using new products and materials in the Weber range, in the plastering workshops at Leicester College.

The UK has one of the oldest housing stocks on average of any country in the world. 75% of non-domestic buildings were built before 1985, and nearly one third before 1940. We have lower energy efficiency for heating space than many other European countries, even allowing for outside temperature.

The Green Deal has been established by the Department of Energy and Climate Change to meet the objectives of the Energy Act 2011, which intends to reduce carbon emissions cost effectively by revolutionizing the energy efficiency of these British properties.

Nick Fall, Trainer/Assessor in Plastering at Leicester College, has also been training with the companies to become one of the first assessors in this technique in the country. Leicester College are now working with Well Warm to set up a new NVQ qualification, allowing College learners to work as Apprentices and train with Well Warm throughout their course.

Nick said: “We hope the green deal will revitalise the construction industry at a time when the sustainability divide grows ever greater. Opportunities like this partnership with Well Warm are great for us to re-training existing construction workers, as well as training our learners who are the up and coming workforce of the future.”

Arron Cooper, Director of Well Warm, added: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to create jobs for young people and to up-skill existing trades people and in turn help drive our economy forward.

“We are also hoping to raise awareness and help educate UK consumers on energy efficiency and show that green energy and insulation measures are a good way to start tackling the recession. If we can help drive energy bills down we can help people towards a better standard of living with no upfront costs or sometimes no costs at all.

“The demand in the Midlands for insulation and renewable energy is now becoming greater than our existing teams resources, so we hope this partnership with Leicester College will not only drive the opportunity to put young people into long term employment, but we will also have the benefit of employing qualified trades people to cope with the demand that's out there.”

This partnership is an opportunity for Leicester College and Well Warm to show leadership in up-skilling and training men and women to have the ability to support the Green Deal and Climate Change Act.
