Mansell, a Balfour Beatty brand, has been appointed through the Liftco Framework to undertake the design, build and fit out of a new £23.6 million hospital in Welwyn Garden City.
The new QEII healthcare facility will provide a local A&E, outpatient, diagnostic and therapy services, improving healthcare provision in Welwyn Garden City and the surrounding areas.
This significant healthcare contract adds to Mansell’s growing work record under the LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) initiative with Assemble Community Partnership, with whom it recently delivered the Bedford Enhanced Services Centre.
Work to construct the new four-storey facility, which will house 8,542m2 of clinical and community space, began in April and is scheduled to complete in Spring 2015.
Built to the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, sustainable design features include solar panels, a green roof, air source heat pumps and the use of natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption.
To ensure existing healthcare services remain unaffected by construction works, the new facility is being constructed adjacent to the existing operational QEII Hospital. Once complete, healthcare services will be transferred to the new QEII hospital. The remainder of the site will be disposed of by East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
