Work to build eight new homes designed for people with learning difficulties has started in Scunthorpe.
North Lincolnshire Homes (NLH) in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and North Lincolnshire Council are building their first specially designed supported housing scheme in North Lincolnshire.
The homes, off Haig Avenue, are being built by Scunthorpe based contractor T G Sowerby Developments Ltd and will cost in the region of £800,000.
The work is due to be completed by December & residents will be able to move in shortly afterwards.
This is the first scheme in the region to start on site with funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) administered Care and Support Specialised Housing Fund (CSSH).
The aim of the funding is to support the development of specialised housing for older people and disabled adults so they can live as independently as possible.
The 1 bedroom apartments are designed to be open plan allowing residents ease of movement around the living area no matter levels of mobility. There is also provision for an additional bedroom to be created for a carer or relative.
Each apartment comes with a parking space and are dual aspect giving access to a garden area & allowing plenty of light to come through the building. The homes are designed to be highly energy efficient with the use of renewable air source heating making sure residents can save money on their energy bills.
Martin Phillips, Development Manager at NLH said: “We want people to be able to live as independent lives as they wish & specially designed homes like these will be allow people to do just that. Working with our partners at the HCA and the Council we are able to create new affordable homes to fulfil an ever growing need for specialist housing. We’ve been able to incorporate lots of special features in the design of the homes, so we can provide the best possible properties for people who would otherwise struggle to live an independent life.”
Helen Fielding, Area Manager from the Homes and Communities Agency added: “The Care and Support Specialised Housing Fund has been established for exactly this kind of high quality scheme, and we are really pleased to see our programme in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber getting underway with such a good project.”
