The construction of some 1,300 new student residential places for the University of Exeter is incorporating a variety of sustainability features, and has led to the installation of waste water as well as the rainwater systems manufactured by Marley Plumbing and Drainage, proving their versatility.
The construction of the new four, six and seven storey accommodation buildings at Lafrowda on the University of Exeter’s Streatham campus in the city is part of a wider development, and is being undertaken by Cowlin Construction, with Kingswood Limited being the specialist installer of the Marley Deepflow guttering and down-pipes. Meanwhile, the M&E contractor has employed pipes and fittings from Marley’s soil and waste range to route run-off from the roof into the rainwater harvesting systems that then store water for toilet flushing.
In addition, the specialist roofline contractor from South Brent in Devon made use of roof outlets - which offer a 110mm outlet connection - in order to allow greater flexibility in the siting of downpipes.
The Project Manager for Kingswood Limited, Mr Dennis Crown, comments: “We are specialists in roofline and rainwater systems but Marley is our preferred manufacturer of PVC-U. This is because we want a product that is well made, acceptable to clients, and adaptable as well. It is helpful that Marley produces downpipes in 3.0 metre and 5 metre lengths. If you are only using a small van for transport you want to carry the shortest length.”
A spokesperson for the university added: “The University of Exeter has invested £130 million in student accommodation across its Streatham Campus, providing 2,600 new places. Bright, modern and designed to the highest standards, the developments also draw on the latest sustainable living technology. The development is part of the University of Exeter’s commitment to reducing pressure on the city’s housing stock by accommodating more students on campus.”
All of the Marley Plumbing and Drainage products for the Cowlin contract at the University of Exeter were purchased by Kingswood through Wolseley in Plymouth.
