Balfour Beatty has completed a fast track refurbishment scheme of 520 student accommodation spaces for Loughborough University.
The £8.8 million refurbishment project of the Falkner Eggington accommodation blocks involved the design, build and fit-out of the existing 1970s buildings with the provision of a new social hub, launderette, bicycle and bin storage facilities.
The project’s scope of works included mechanical and electrical upgrades, the fitting of new floors, ceilings, kitchens and bathrooms and replacement of roofs, exterior doors and windows with landscaping completing the project.
In order to meet our customer’s requirements Balfour Beatty’s highly experienced team completed the project in forty-four weeks with the help of effective local supply chain relationships. Altogether, 85% of the supply chain engaged on the project originated from within a forty mile radius, enabling responsiveness to the requirements of the project.
Throughout the project, Balfour Beatty supported the University and its students, participating in fundraising for students who competed in the Paralympics in aid of the Peter Harrison Foundation Centre, which is based at the University.
Martin Channell, Loughborough University Project Manager, said: “It was important that we completed this project on a very tight schedule and we are pleased that Balfour Beatty was able to deliver to our high expectations and within this schedule through its excellent local supply chain. Thanks to this close collaboration with Balfour Beatty we have been able to welcome in our first cohort of students to the upgraded facilities in time for the start of the new term.”
Ian Taylor, Balfour Beatty Managing Director, East Midlands, said: “We are delighted to have delivered this upgrade to the Falkner Eggington buildings at Loughborough University. We were able to complete this project to an extremely tight timeframe by making the most of our excellent local and regional relationships with a strong supply chain.”
Balfour Beatty is also completing the £11.5 million construction of the University’s National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine which is due for completion in summer 2014.
