The Olympic Games is one of the most high profile events imaginable meaning security is of paramount importance.
As such, GE Lighting has supplied its Odyssey luminaires and CMH Streetwise lamps to ensure the highest levels of safety and security within the main visitor areas in the Olympic Park, with each utilising bright white light.
London 2012 has been the catalyst for transforming 2.5 square kilometres of land in East London. What was once industrial land has been rapidly transformed over the last few years into green space that both visitors to the Olympic Games and local residents can enjoy, and it is now officially the Olympic Park.
The issue of security for visitors walking within the Olympic Park was high on the agenda for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The team worked with Global Olympic Games Sponsor GE Lighting to deliver a lighting solution for the Olympic Park that would ensure visitors felt comfortable and safe, but would also still deliver in terms of efficiency, maintenance and sustainability.
As such, over 600 of GE Lighting's Odyssey luminaires were installed, a high performing road lighting fitting. Odyssey provides modern functional aesthetics and helps to improve ease of installation and maintenance. An ideal lighting solution where the lighting level requirements are demanding, Odyssey has been designed with high-efficiency photometric reflectors and a reliable IP66 optical assembly.
In addition, over 600 of GE Lighting's CMH Streetwise lamps were installed in the Olympic Park. These lamps deliver a brighter, safer light for users of the space - as the white light and high colour rendering increases safety and reduces after-dark accidents by making it easier for visitors to recognise shapes and colours - particularly in the peripheral vision. Furthermore, GE Lighting's CMH Streetwise lamps help to ensure footage gained through CCTV cameras is a clear as possible.
While increasing quality of light in the Olympic Park, the CMH Streetwise lamps offer energy savings as well, particularly as the lighting needs to remain lit for long periods of time - meaning energy use could be potentially high. Instead, using CMH StreetWise™ lamps in place of High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps can cut energy use by up to 30%.
Phil Marshall, President and CEO, GE Lighting EMEA commented: "The lighting we have provided for the Olympic Park will enhance the levels of safety and security but crucially, as a London Sustainability Partner as well, our Odyssey luminaires and Streetwise lamps will deliver a low impact, energy efficient and sustainable lighting scheme, long after the Olympic Games are over."
