Amex Stadium in line for top award

The new home of Brighton Football Club has been shortlisted for a prestigious architectural award.

The American Express Community Stadium will compete against the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, Brockholes Visitor Centre, Forsyth Barr Stadium in New Zealand and The Pods Scunthorpe Sports Academy Award for Sports or Leisure Structures from the Institute of Structural Engineers.

Located among the slopes of the South Downs, the American Express Community Stadium mirrors the undulating landscape through its curving form set into the surrounding grass and chalk.

Very long span trusses provide the spine of the structure and, although this meant a complex erection, the resulting roof is extremely light.

Sensitive handling of the earthworks and drainage compliment the impressive structural engineering behind the creation of this dramatic project.

This year the Structural Awards has attracted well over 100 entries across the 11 categories. The popularity of the awards is testimony to its recognition of the world’s best structural engineering projects and its reputation as a great evening of celebration for everybody involved.

Attending the Structural Awards 2012 gives delegates an exciting insight into the projects leading the industry in 2012 and shaping it into the future. With a guest speaker, fine three-course dining and the company of the industry’s most esteemed individuals and firms, it’s an occasion not to be missed.

This year, the Structural Awards will be held at the Marriott Grosvenor Square, London on November 2.
