CIBSE launches new guidance on health, wellbeing and net zero carbon in buildings

CIBSE has published new guidance, TM72 Health, wellbeing, and net-zero carbon in buildings, to help building professionals consider health and wellbeing alongside net zero carbon objectives, supporting the design and operation of buildings that are better for both people and the environment.

Health, wellbeing, and net-zero carbon in buildings examines how decisions made to reduce carbon emissions can affect the health, comfort and wellbeing of building occupants. It provides guidance on identifying opportunities where these priorities can work together, while recognising potential trade-offs and unintended consequences.

With the industry working towards net zero carbon, there is a growing need to ensure that measures to reduce energy consumption and embodied carbon do not compromise the quality of indoor environments or the experience of those using buildings.

The publication considers the relationship between decarbonisation and health and wellbeing within the wider context of sustainability. It also addresses issues such as equity, inclusion and social value, recognising that the impact of buildings extends beyond their environmental performance.

A key focus is the importance of assessing buildings throughout their life, rather than relying solely on design-stage predictions. The guidance considers how measured building performance and feedback from occupants can help professionals understand whether buildings are delivering their intended outcomes and identify where improvements may be needed.

The publication also supports professionals working towards the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS), providing additional guidance on how to consider health and wellbeing when implementing the Standard or undertaking building decarbonisation projects more widely.

In her foreword, Katie Clemence-Jackson, CEO of Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard Limited, said: "Our built environment’s design affects every aspect of human experience, from those as fundamental as safety and belonging, to basic needs such as comfort and warmth. If we get it right, we can bring down emissions, provide comfortable, flourishing spaces, and help all building users to have healthier, safer, and more productive lives."

The guidance has been developed by principal authors Emma Gibbons (UCL), Jiannan Luo (Foster + Partners), Anna Mavrogianni (UCL), Milena Stojkovic (AtkinsRéalis) and Marcella Ucci (UCL).

It is intended for building services engineers, architects, designers, sustainability consultants and other built environment professionals involved in the design, delivery and operation of low-carbon buildings.

Health, wellbeing, and net-zero carbon in buildings is now available through CIBSE.
