Crittall cuts coating energy use with new Low-E powder technology

Crittall Windows is adopting new Low-E architectural powder coatings that can significantly reduce the energy required to finish its iconic steel windows and doors.

The company has announced the adoption of Interpon D1036 Low-E and Interpon D2525 Low-E from AkzoNobel. The coatings offer the same performance and longevity as the established formulations, but can be cured at 150°C rather than the traditional 180°C.

That 30°C reduction in curing temperature means less energy is required during production, helping to reduce carbon emissions while improving the efficiency of Crittall’s manufacturing process.

For architects and specifiers, the benefit extends beyond the factory. Choosing a product manufactured using a lower-energy coating process can contribute to reducing the embodied carbon associated with a building project, without compromising the durability or appearance of the finished steelwork.

These coatings also build on the strong sustainability credentials of Crittall steel windows which are manufactured using recycled steel – a product that remains infinitely recyclable without impacting overall quality. Durability adds to this, as steel windows installed a century ago are still in use today, showing the whole-life cycle cost of Crittall is spread across decades rather than years.

Interpon D1036 Low-E is suitable for internal and external applications, while superdurable Interpon D2525 Low-E is designed for external surfaces where enhanced durability is required, including windows, doors and building facades.

Both coatings are Qualicoat certified and available in all RAL and BS colours including custom shades, giving architects and designers complete freedom over the finish.

Russell Ager, Managing Director of Crittall Windows, says: “Sustainability must be about making practical changes throughout the manufacturing process, and this is a good example of that approach. By adopting a coating that cures at a significantly lower temperature, we can reduce the energy used in production while maintaining the performance, durability and finish that Crittall products are known for.

“It’s an improvement to a sustainable product made from recycled steel designed to last generations. It also gives architects and specifiers another way to make more responsible choices when developing building projects, without having to compromise on design or performance.”

The move forms part of Crittall’s continuing commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its UK manufacturing operations while delivering the long-term performance expected from architectural steel windows and doors.
