Morgan Sindall Construction appointed for £10m Edinburgh Fire Station rebuild

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to demolish and rebuild Liberton Community Fire Station.

Procured through the SCAPE Scotland Construction Framework, the £10m scheme will deliver the first new-build fire station in Edinburgh in more than 30 years, and the first anywhere in Scotland since the creation of the national service in 2013.

Occupying a key strategic location for SFRS in responding to emergencies across Edinburgh and the east of Scotland, Liberton station will provide a modern facility designed to support communities and meet SFRS service delivery demands for decades to come.

The new facility will include upgraded welfare and decontamination facilities and an improved community space, with specific areas for managing contaminated fire kits to bolster the safety and wellbeing of SFRS staff.

The project forms part of a wider programme of works to address fire stations affected by reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) over the next five years, with further repair and rebuild works planned across the country.

The appointment builds on Morgan Sindall's long-standing relationship with SFRS, following the successful delivery of a programme of four fire station refurbishments at Inverness, Dingwall, Newcraighall and Galashiels.

Delivered through the SCAPE Scotland Construction Framework, all four stations were completed on time, within budget and without disruption to live blue light operations. You can read more about them in the Morgan Sindall Scottish Fire & Rescue Case Study.

Stuart Parker, Managing Director of Morgan Sindall Construction in Scotland, said: “We are proud to have been chosen by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to deliver this landmark project for Edinburgh. Building the city's first new fire station in more than three decades is a real privilege, and reflects the strength of the relationship we have developed with SFRS over recent years.

“Having successfully delivered refurbishments at Inverness, Dingwall, Newcraighall and Galashiels, our Scotland-based team understands both the technical requirements and the operational sensitivities of working within live blue light environments. We look forward to delivering a modern, fit-for-purpose station that supports the wellbeing of firefighters and serves the Liberton community."

David Dourley, Area Commander and SFRS Local Senior Officer for City of Edinburgh, said: “This is an exciting project and represents a significant investment to improve service delivery and firefighter safety. This will be the first new build station in Edinburgh in more than 30 years directly replacing the former station that has faithfully served our staff and the community for 50 years.

“The new station will be modern and fit for purpose and has been designed to meet operational demand and the growing needs of our communities. Once complete, operational efficiency, emergency response and engagement capabilities will be bolstered across Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.”

Rachel Park, Framework Manager at SCAPE Scotland, said: “Through the SCAPE Scotland Construction Framework, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Morgan Sindall have developed a strong and trusted partnership, with early contractor involvement driving collaboration and a consistency in approach to project delivery.

“Having successfully delivered four fire station projects together, this latest project builds on a proven track record of quality, efficiency and successful outcomes. We are proud to support a project that not only delivers long-term value for our client, but also provides a modern, high-quality facility that will serve firefighters and the local community for many years to come.”
