Mace Construct has celebrated the topping out of Lasdun Wall at the University of East Anglia (UEA), marking a critical milestone in the multi-year redevelopment of the campus' most recognisable architectural landmark.

The four-phase programme is transforming the mid-century Grade II-listed complex into a low-carbon, future-ready hub for world-class science, learning, and discovery.

Originally built in the 1960's, the striking geometric compound, comprised of four interlinked buildings, is being reimagined through an ambitious retrofit that intertwines its heritage with contemporary design and sustainability.

With the UK’s largest post‑war Grade II listed extensions reaching new heights, phase one completes with upgrades to Building 3 for world‑class science and teaching. Buildings 4, 5 and 6 stay fully operational to support UEA’s ongoing research.

Demonstrating that a circular approach to retrofit is achievable at scale, particularly through a re-use first philosophy, Lasdun Wall is progressing with unwavering quality and ambition. To date, extensive onsite reuse of materials including timber, has already saved over 860 tonnes of CO₂e, with projected savings of 2,092 tonnes as the programme continues. All non-hazardous construction waste has been diverted from landfill, tracked via live KPI dashboards, and 819 tonnes of recycled aggregates have been incorporated into the build.

Where upgrades such as glazing have been essential to the retrofit, lower-energy alternatives were installed to deliver an 85% improvement in thermal performance - this will save an estimated 30 tonnes of operational carbon annually. Prefabricated modular systems, manufactured offsite and designed for future disassembly, also ensure that the building remains adaptable for future occupant needs.

Beyond environmental impact, Mace Construct is supporting the creation of hundreds of jobs and over 10 apprenticeship opportunities throughout the retrofit, underpinning UAE's ambitions to provide long-term opportunities to the local community.

Rob Lemming, Managing Director for Public Sector and Life Sciences at Mace Construct, added: “Reaching the topping out of Lasdun Wall demonstrates the real progress being made, and the strength of our collaborative approach with UEA and the wider project team. Retrofitting this landmark building to modern standards while driving down carbon, preserving its architectural character, and maintaining continuity of campus activity is an incredibly ambitious undertaking.

This milestone reflects both the team’s skills and determination, and our long-term commitment to the region - supporting local jobs, delivering community impact, and strengthening our ongoing presence across the campus and its neighbouring area. We’re delighted to celebrate this achievement and look forward to shaping the next phases of this transformative programme.”
