The Construction Inclusion Coalition (CIC) is using “Balance the Scales” the UN theme for International Women’s Day 2026, to highlight ways females in building materials can bridge ‘the confidence gap.’
This year the United Nations is calling on organisations to use International Women’s Day to “Balance the Scales” by dismantling systemic barriers and create fair, inclusive opportunities for women and girls worldwide.
The theme, which aligns with UN Women’s goals, is an appeal for commitment and accountability from individuals and organisations. The CIC aims to foster environments that prioritise the well-being and inclusion of all, across the building materials industry, and throughout March its members are hosting sessions to create space for honest conversation that dismantles barriers and foster inclusion within building materials organisations.
The “Coffee With… Leaders Driving Equity” sessions will see inspirational female leaders share the highs and lows of navigating predominantly male environments, offering practical advice and mentorship to empower the next generation to overcome barriers including ‘the confidence gap’.
Research shows that 51% of women in European corporations perceive self-confidence as a significant barrier to moving up through the hierarchy of a company, and that this barrier was more pronounced for women of ethnic diversity and disabled women.*
There are similar trends in the UK with the Career Development Institute finding in 2025 that of 5,000 people surveyed for their Valuing Careers research, 32% of women cited a lack of confidence as a major obstacle to achieving their career goals, compared to 25% of men.**
“The Balance the Scales theme for International Women’s Day challenges our organisations to move beyond symbolic gestures to actively create fair, inclusive environments” says CIC Chair Jen Cassidy.
“But some of the biggest barriers to career progression, such as the confidence gap, can be invisible and will require a different approach. We want to use empowerment through knowledge, to equip people with strategies to challenge bias and advocate for equal access, and the sessions we have planned offer advice from female leaders who will ‘put the ladder down’ for those on the way up, helping to level the playing field one conversation at a time.”
Many of the planned sessions will be hosted by CIC Strategic Partners, including Travis Perkins, Wavin, Ibstock, Huws Gray, Highbourne Group, Norcros Group and Bristan as part of the cross-organisational community committed to supporting women to grow their careers, share resources and best practice.
