Three Key Trends Steering the Next Wave of Pool Design

Compass Pools by Waterstream has released its latest Swimming Pool Trends Report, offering new insights into how evolving design priorities, technological advancements and sustainability requirements are reshaping the UK pool building landscape. Drawing on research with 2,000 homeowners and recent installation data, the report highlights a marked shift toward pools designed as integrated architectural features that prioritise performance, efficiency and year-round usability.

The modern pool now sits firmly within broader conversations around residential specification, outdoor living planning and long-term operational efficiency. The findings show pools now rank as the UK’s most desirable luxury home addition (27%), and that homeowners increasingly view them as lasting assets.

The report identifies three specification-led trends that will influence garden design and construction in the year ahead:

Technology-Driven Pool Ownership

Smart pool systems are set to become the standard, with sustainability considerations acting as a driving force for these advancements. An overwhelming 88% of prospective pool owners see water and energy management as essential factors in their decision-making. This shift has led to increased adoption of technology that enables homeowners to control cleaning, heating and lighting with voice commands or mobile apps. Advances in solar-assisted heating and high-performance insulation mean year-round swimming is now a reality for homes across the UK.

The Rise of Compact & Creative Design

Compact luxury pools have surged in popularity, answering the needs of homeowners seeking premium features in urban and mid‑sized plots. Darker finishes, including deep greys and anthracites with metallic flecks, are becoming a signature aesthetic choice, creating a contemporary, design-driven look. When paired with a counter-current turbine, the pool becomes an endless swimming lane, delivering a powerful fitness solution even in limited spaces, and addressing one of the biggest perceived obstacles to pool ownership, which for 28% of homeowners is a lack of garden space.

Pools as Wellness Hubs

Homeowners are placing greater emphasis on health and wellbeing in home design, with 70% believing that having a swimming pool will significantly improve this important part of their lives. Pools are being paired with saunas, cold plunge zones and hydrotherapy features, creating holistic environments for relaxation, recovery and daily wellness routines.

“For architects and landscape designers, the brief is shifting toward high‑performance, low‑maintenance builds that are integrated into the site from day one,” notes Alex Kemsley, MD of Compass Pools by Waterstream.
