The Lower Darent Riverside Strategy, the Co-Op Live Arena, and a new visitor attraction in Durham were among the winners at the 2025 RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence.
The winners of 16 categories were revealed at a glittering gala dinner on 27 November at Bloomsbury Big Top in central London.
The Lower Darent Riverside Strategy was awarded the Excellence in Planning for the Natural Environment and Silver Jubilee Cup for its comprehensive, evidence-based approach to sustainable flood defence.
Judges applauded its innovative use of nature-based solutions, strong policy links, and adaptive, community-focused engagement. They said the project ‘sets a benchmark for resilience, inclusivity, and regeneration, offering valuable lessons for others.’
The Co-Op Live Arena won the Excellence in Planning for a Successful Economy award for a scheme which has re-established Manchester on the music map.
The Story, an attraction celebrating the history of County Durham, picked up the Excellence in Heritage and Culture award for showing ‘exemplary inclusivity and cutting-edge heating and cooling technology.”
Dr Victoria Hills, Chief Executive of the RTPI said: “This year’s awards are a fabulous celebration of planning both across the UK and internationally, showcasing an exceptionally high standard of entries.
“Each entry was a demonstration of the positive contributions that planners are making within their communities as well as the work the planning profession is putting in to create thriving and innovative places."
