Rainton Construction Scotland has started work on the £20.5 million transformation of Glasgow’s ‘iconic’ George Square and surrounding streets.
This flagship city-centre project is part of the Glasgow Avenues Programme, a bold regeneration initiative funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
The UK and Scottish Governments are each contributing £8.815 million towards the contract, which is redefining how public spaces are experienced in Glasgow’s civic heart.
As part of initial activity, all 11 bronze statues, including tributes to Robert Burns, James Watt and Queen Victoria, were safely removed for expert conservation and restoration. They will return to their enhanced surroundings in 2026.

Neil McCallum, managing director of Rainton Construction Scotland, said: “This contract is not just a significant win for the company; it’s a responsibility to safeguard and renew one of Scotland’s most iconic public spaces.
“With work already underway, starting with statue conservation and hoarding installation, we’re committed to delivering a revitalised George Square by August 2026, blending heritage, sustainability and modern civic life.”
Over the next 12 months, work will continue in the city centre to:
Public and stakeholder consultations informed the design, ensuring a seamless blend of formality and relaxation.
With work on the Square due for completion next summer, the surrounding streets will be finished by summer 2027.
As a carbon-negative, climate-positive contractor, Rainton Construction Scotland integrates sustainable practices into every project. Since early 2023, the company has offset its emissions through nature-based initiatives, including managing a 22-acre biodiversity woodland in Ayrshire, showcasing its commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.
This high-profile contract underscores Rainton Construction Scotland's expertise in urban regeneration, following success in award-nominated schemes like Sauchiehall Street Avenue and Holland Street Avenues Project.
