Kier has secured a £139m contract with Severn Trent to upgrade Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works in Leicestershire.
Set to serve 750,000 residents, and designed to meet growing demand and tighter environmental standards, the project will significantly enhance treatment performance, improve water quality, and increase the site’s long-term resilience.
Critically, the works will increase dry weather flow capacity by 24%, and full flow to treatment by around 20%.

Wanlip is Severn Trent’s third-largest wastewater treatment facility, and this flagship scheme forms a vital part of Severn Trent’s wider Green Recovery programme, reflecting the strength of a trusted relationship built over more than 20 years between Severn Trent and Kier.
Delivered in close collaboration with Severn Trent and specialist delivery partners, the project builds on a successful early contractor involvement phase, during which enabling works and detailed design development were completed.
The project starts in summer 2025 and is planned to be completed in 2028.
Andrew Bradshaw, Group managing director – Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks, said: "We’re extremely pleased to be delivering this major project for Severn Trent Water. Our continued involvement as we move into the Asset Management Period 8 cycle reflects the strength and success of our long-standing relationship. We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to deliver critical infrastructure together."
Andy Lingham, managing director of Water within Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks, said: "This is a significant project for Severn Trent, and we’re pleased to be bringing our expertise to help deliver it. Our relationship spans more than 20 years, and this is one of many projects we’ll be delivering in this AMP8 cycle. Collaboration will be key to making it a success, with all parties co-located in our new welfare village, working together to ensure safe, efficient, and successful delivery."
"It’s exceedingly rare for us to award contracts of this size and it really speaks to the scale of these upgrades at Wanlip and our commitment to improving our infrastructure, delivering a reliable high-performing service for our customers, and protecting the environment," added James Jesic, Capital Delivery and Commercial Director at, Severn Trent.
This award further reinforces Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks’ position as a key delivery partner in the UK water sector, following recent AMP8 contract wins and renewals with Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities, Southern Water, and Anglian Water.
