A Greener Future in Every Coat: The Sustainable, Recyclable, Reuseable Clay Lime Plaster

Latest News Tue, Jul 22, 2025 10:35 AM

The latest product development from eco-friendly, mineral masters at KEIM. Introducing KEIM Janus – their first clay-lime plaster … with extra eco benefits!

Unlike traditional lime, lime-cement, or gypsum plasters, KEIM Janus uses around 40% less energy to manufacture, and what’s more, it’s recyclable at the end of its life!

KEIM Janus, so named after the Roman god with two faces to depict the ability to look both back to the past, and forward to the future is the newest product innovation that combines all the key benefits associated with KEIM within an interior plaster.

What benefits does KEIM Janus have compared to traditional lime or gypsum plasters?

KEIM Mineral Paints are known for their eco-friendly virtually VOC-free paints, coatings, finishes and renders. They are the product of choice for many architects, designers, and homeowners as their products are kind to use, and kind to the environment. Missing from their portfolio, which also includes colourwashes and one coat systems, was a sustainable interior plaster, until now!

Vanessa Fox, Commercial Manager, KEIM UK helps to explain, ‘This was the natural evolution in our product development but a major step forward for sustainable construction. Engineered with both performance and the planet in mind, KEIM Janus requires 40% less energy to manufacture, dramatically reducing carbon footprint which is a key factor to support the circular building practices and helps architects, builders, and designers to meet the growing demands for sustainable materials.’

What are the key benefits to architects, decorators, or contractors?

The most significant benefit of KEIM Janus is the reduced CO₂ required during manufacture compared to traditional lime plasters and its ability to remove and reuse. But equally, the many benefits that their clay-lime based product offers include;

  • 99% mineral ingredients
  • More durable and longer lasting than traditional plasters
  • No added solvents, preservatives, and plasticisers; healthier indoor air quality
  • Class CS I DIN EN 998-1 compared to clay plasters
  • Mould resistant
  • Air purification due to the high clay content
  • Reusable at the end of life / fully recyclable
  • Two grain sizes – 0.5mm and 1.2mm

Vanessa Fox concludes, ‘KEIM Janus is fully recyclable alternative to traditional lime plaster, and beautiful to use. Several lime plaster specialists have trialled KEIM Janus with us and all commented that it is so easy to apply, so a win, win, win for the customer, decorator, and the planet!’
