The Institution of Structural Engineers’ (IStructE) Structural Safety and Risk conference takes place on 12 June 2025, at its HQ in London.

The one-day conference will be chaired by Emily Harbottle, Founder and CEO of Cascade Risk Management.

Emily is a former military helicopter pilot and aviation risk specialist, bringing fresh perspectives about risk management in the built environment.

The event has an engaging and expert range of speakers, covering a wide range of subjects from fire safety to the safety culture. They include:

  • Paul Morrell OBE, who was appointed in 2021 by government to lead an independent review of the testing regime for construction products. As the keynote speaker, Paul Morrell’s address is titled “Skill and care in the service of building safety.”
  • Kate Grange KC, a barrister at 39 Essex Chambers. Kate was one of the lead counsel on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, focusing on construction and technical aspects. Kate’s session is titled “Building a safety culture: lessons from Grenfell.”
  • Paul Livesey, Head of Operations for CROSS (Collaborative Reporting on Safer Structures), the confidential reporting system which allows professionals working in the built environment to report on fire and structural safety issues. Paul’s address is “Lessons from CROSS: Improving Structural Safety Through Reporting.”
  • Charlotte Wildman, Design Manager at Willmott Dixon. Charlotte’s focus is “Mitigating the risks in the design & build contract.”
  • Peter Wilkinson, Fire Engineering Consultant, also representing CROSS. Peter will speak about “Emerging trends in fire safety.”

Event details can be found on IStructE’s website, with a full list of the speakers and the conference programme detailing the day’s sessions.
