Inquiry into industry’s ability to build 1.5m homes launched

CIC is launching a call for evidence to explore the critical question: "How can we build 1.5 million quality homes in this Parliament?".

This follows from the government’s ambitious housing targets to address the acute housing crisis in the UK, to include building 1.5 million new homes during this parliamentary term.

The target aims to boost housebuilding in areas most in need, with a focus on affordable and social housing.

The government has introduced mandatory housing targets for councils, ensuring that local authorities play a crucial role in meeting these goals. Additionally, Labour's plan includes reforms to the planning system to facilitate faster and more efficient construction processes.

This call for evidence aims to gather insights, strategies, and innovative solutions from industry experts, stakeholders, and the public in how we can fulfil the pressing need for quality housing.

CIC is particularly interested in evidence that addresses the following areas:

  • Economic Viability: How do we balance economic viability with high quality - what are the current barriers to that?
  • Sustainable Building Practices: How can we ensure that new homes are environmentally friendly and energy-efficient?
  • Affordable Housing Solutions: What strategies can be implemented to make housing more affordable for all income levels?
  • Innovative Construction Techniques: How can modern construction methods and technologies accelerate the building process while maintaining quality?
  • Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: What changes in policy and regulation are necessary to support the rapid construction of quality homes?
  • Community and Infrastructure Development: How can we ensure that new housing developments are well-integrated with local communities and infrastructure?
  • Flood Risk Management: How can we avoid building in areas of higher flood risk to minimise potential damage and ensure safety?

CIC invites submissions from all interested parties to be sent electronically to enquiries@cic.org.uk by 14 May 2025. The evidence should include examples of proven strategies and be no more than four pages in length.
