Multidisciplinary house of design, BDP, has been appointed to lead the design of the University of Southampton’s new campus in Delhi.
The state-of-the-art campus in Gurugram will provide a world-class learning environment, seamlessly integrating UK and Indian academic excellence.
BDP’s design approach transforms an existing office building into a flexible, cutting-edge facility that encourages collaboration and the exchange of ideas. The design prioritises flexibility, collaboration, and the creation of a dynamic academic community, creating meaningful interactions between students, academics, and industry leaders, ensuring a globally connected educational experience.
A central focus of the design is the creation of innovative learning environments. The campus will feature versatile teaching spaces, including lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and collaborative workspaces, all designed to support diverse learning styles and encourage interdisciplinary exchange. Adaptability and efficiency are vital to the design, with multi-purpose areas transitioning seamlessly between formal teaching, independent learning and research and workplace activities, maximising resource use while promoting engagement between students and faculties.
The University of Southampton is the first international university to be granted a licence to establish a comprehensive campus under India’s National Education Policy guidelines.
The campus design embraces the University’s Triple Helix approach by incorporating dedicated research and enterprise space that will enable collaboration between academia, industry, and government. This integration of research, innovation, and enterprise will create new opportunities for students and academics to engage with real-world challenges and drive forward advancements in their fields.
Beyond its academic function, the campus is designed to establish a strong sense of place. It honours the University of Southampton’s heritage while celebrating India’s rich cultural identity, embedding local influences within a global framework. Interior spaces will feature design elements inspired by Southampton’s maritime history and green landscapes, alongside intricate patterns and vibrant colours reflecting India’s cultural traditions.
Offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Computer Science, Business, Economics, and Law, the campus will attract students from diverse backgrounds. With a blend of international and domestic faculty, it represents a significant investment in India’s education landscape and reinforces Southampton’s position as a globally connected institution.

The new campus is due to open in Autumn 2025.
