Specifications are important. They help avoid costly mistakes and provide important technical assurances regarding quality and standards.

As specifications pass down the supply chain, they are potentially at risk from contractor and sub-contractor influence, where their profit margins and operational costs are a key consideration.

As sustainability becomes an increasingly important criterion for architects, specifiers and designers, it is crucial for procurement professionals to play a pivotal role in ensuring that everyone in the supply chain adheres to the same original intent. This not only secures important accreditation points with leading sustainable industry bodies such as LEED, WELL, and BREEAM but also empowers procurement professionals to significantly impact project sustainability. Other factors such as ‘whole life carbon performance’, ‘waste avoidance’ or how a particular product might add social value on a project are key considerations when it comes to procurement.

Patrick Folkes, founder of Graphenstone UK says “It is very important for any specifier to cite key details when drafting specification documents including noting important certifications, such as our special Cradle to Cradle certification which means that our paints meet key critical category assessments, including material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship and social fairness.

Its these kinds of details, which help the specifier to ensure that key technical and ESG specifications are maintained from the very start of projects right through to completion. This offers peace of mind and helps ensure sustainable integrity from the onset of any project through to completion. Whilst often overlooked, air-purifying paints could play a small but vital role in helping the design and building industries meet important ESG goals. It is excellent to see supply chain transparency and attention to responsible sourcing increase yearly. However, there is still a long way to go."

Graphenstone’s graphene-infused, natural mineral paint formulations actively help to 'purify' the air in the atmosphere by absorbing surrounding CO2 as they cure (the majority in the first 30 days following application).

They also offer enhanced durability, high levels of pigmentation, mould prevention, superior washability and increased coverage levels. Its paints are easy to apply, and application costs are comparable to some of the bigger coatings suppliers names. So when weighing up which paint brand to chose remember to factor in the ‘big picture’ including the impact of paints in terms of material health, product circularity, cleaner air, carbon savings and a reduction of cope 3 emissions.
