Phase two of Building North East and Yorkshire’s Net Zero Carbon in Operation (NZCiO) project, Greenhead College, has been successfully handed over, with students now using the new facilities.
The Greenhead College sixth form building, is part of the first wave of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme, which is funding the rebuilding or refurbishment of 500 schools and colleges across the UK.
The design for Greenhead College removes the use of fossil fuels and adopts a fabric-first approach to improve the envelope of the college, reducing the energy demand through passive design methods, and helping achieve an NZCiO specification.
The four-storey, 57,000 sqft building features state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms, as well as a main hall and dining space. Following the handover of phase two, work will soon begin on phases three and four, which will involve the demolition of an existing building and the construction of a new two-storey 9,600 sqft in-fill building. Works also include the formation of a new multi-use games area (MUGA) pitch.
Cliff Wheatley, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building North West and Yorkshire, commented: “It is great to see this project reach the handover phase, with both staff and students delighted with the new building. This project is a fantastic addition to our portfolio and has proved a productive learning experience as we continue to develop our approach to producing net zero educational facilities.”
