In 2021 the overall UK space heating market recovered to near pre-pandemic levels, despite the ongoing supply chain issues following Brexit.
Residential space heating accounted for around 52% of the overall market in 2021, but there is some overlap between residential and non-residential space heating, with several solutions used across both sectors.
The majority of residential space heating products are generally employed as a secondary heating source, although installed electric heating products compete against wet central heating systems (and other types of central heating systems) as a primary heat source. The UK market for residential space heating equipment includes the following products: gas and electric, installed electric heating, portables and solid fuel stoves.
Whilst the UK market for non-residential space heating comprises commercial and industrial heating systems including boilers, radiators, and other heat emitters, plus stand-alone heaters, and heating controls.
Within the non-residential space heating market RMI installations accounts for an estimated 80%. This sector is supported by the increasing emphasis on energy efficiency, with opportunities to upgrade inefficient systems currently in use.
The retail sector distributes most residential space heating products in the UK with an estimated 63% market share by value. Within the non-residential space heating sector, direct supply remains the main distribution route.
Abdul Tantouch, Editor at AMA Research, comments on the market: “With the high cost of fuel and soaring inflation, homeowners and businesses are increasingly looking for alternative heating solutions that reflect the growing concerns about the environment, but also give value for money. Low carbon, energy efficient space heating products are in greater demand, in non-residential end-use applications, also for primary and secondary heating in residential homes. This particularly the case as the UK moves towards achieving the carbon net zero target by 2050”.
