Kier has completed the building phase of the £97million Heartlands Treatment Centre (HTC) for University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust, on time and on budget.

UHB will now begin moving staff and equipment into the building, ahead of the planned opening to patients in January 2023.

The HTC, the first large-scale capital investment at Heartlands Hospital since 2008, will improve capacity, offering a ‘one-stop-shop’ for patients. The new centre brings a range of services under one roof, including diagnostics, day case procedures, endoscopy, audiology, outpatients, therapies, and imaging services.

With a footprint of over 18,000m2, the building is four storeys high, with 149 tonnes of steel and 12.5 miles of pipework inside. State-of-the-art technology is being installed including patient self-check-in kiosks, brand new theatre suites and cutting-edge imaging equipment, including a wide bore MRI scanner.

Mark Dady, managing director, Kier Construction Eastern and Midlands, said: “We’re immensely proud of our work delivering the Heartlands Treatment Centre. Being able to hand it over to UHB on time and budget, further demonstrates our expertise in providing state-of-the-art health facilities.

“Working closely with UHB, we leave a lasting legacy with this project, an important new treatment centre which will hugely benefit patients, clinical staff and wider community in Birmingham.”

Professor David Rosser, UHB Chief Executive, said: After two years of construction during a challenging period, the HTC has been completed thanks to the hard work of Kier and my UHB colleagues involved in the project.

“Together we have created a landmark new addition to the East Birmingham skyline; an impressive modern and spacious environment which will house world-class facilities and benefit over half-a-million patients every year. We have enjoyed working alongside Kier; a huge thank you to all involved in this superb project.”
