Continuing its growth in the commercial London market, Kier has been appointed by ARC to deliver Refinery, a landmark high spec lab development at ARC West London, Hammersmith, providing a new home for UK life science organisations.
The project will create 121,000 sq. ft of high spec, laboratory, research and development spaces under one roof.
Located on the Northern Embankment of the River Thames, the project will include the extension and full reconfiguration of the existing four-storey building. Its façade and roof will be replaced, two new storeys added, and a green roof will finish the look of the building.

Inside, the space will be fully redeveloped to create flexible laboratories, together with working spaces including a business lounge, design-led offices, co-working spaces, meeting rooms, restaurant and café, event studio, presentation suite and cycle facilities for 200 bicycles.
Outside, Kier will deliver external works to create a new communal park for the public that integrates with the Thames Path and links to neighbouring residential developments.
During the project, Kier will support local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through the Hammersmith and Fulham Local Supply Chain Project, giving them the opportunity to tender for work on site. It will also work closely with the local council (Or London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham) to generate and promote jobs, apprenticeships, work experience and training opportunities to local people.
David McKenzie, managing director for Kier Construction, London and Southern, said: “We are delighted to be working with ARC again on this innovative project which will transform this area of the Thames near Hammersmith. We will be bringing together Kier’s extensive expertise in delivering commercial and life sciences facilities to create a development that will be a showcase for innovation and technology.”
Daniel Pagella, Senior Director for Asset Management at ARC said: “Science organisations need support to develop sustainably and efficiently. They need access to technically and commercially capable space as they grow, in an environment that will help them to attract the talent that’s critical to their success. We’ve designed ARC West London to do just that.”
