Schools achieve increased capacity in time for the new term

Amey Secure Infrastructure’s Scottish projects and facilities management team in Glasgow has reached completion on a modular build project that will provide additional learning capacity for around 300 students and their teachers across two schools in Glasgow.

The facilities include six new classrooms at St Andrews RC Secondary School with a further four at St Mungo’s Academy. Both sites were handed over to the clients on programme, in time for the pupils returning from their summer break in mid-August.

Each classroom has the capacity to house around thirty pupils and their teachers and are fully equipped with washroom facilities, toilets, and storage areas. The inclusion of an independent electrical supply has allowed each unit to be fitted with energy efficient LED lighting and motion sensor lights, which automatically switch on or off when movement is detected to reduce energy consumption.

In addition, all sites are fully DDA compliant, with the installation of suitable access arrangements and toilet facilities to ensure the building is accessible to everyone, regardless of their mobility.

Amey delivered a turnkey solution, which involved all elements of Design and Build and included procurement and scheduling of an offsite fabrication solution. The construction process associated with modular buildings reduces the onsite construction phase, ensuring that any impact on the local community is reduced, alongside environmental benefits such as reduced CO2 and vehicle movements.

Diane Gillies, Amey Operations Director for Scotland, commented: “We’re delighted to have been given the opportunity to develop such an important project that will provide both present and future pupils and staff with a high-quality space in which they can learn and thrive. The new classrooms will benefit the whole community and enable the schools to increase their student intake.”

Tricia Henderson MRICS, Council Representative for Glasgow PPP Education Estate, said: “Glasgow City Council are delighted with the quality of this accommodation.  Amey have delivered on their promises and overcome many obstacles to provide these much-needed classrooms and teaching blocks.   We only conveyed our needs in February of this year, so to have these up and running, particularly in view of the current market is commendable.  The site topography was extremely challenging however, the design and construction experience of Amey and their groundworks contractor shone through with terrific results.

With the alarms systems and school Tannoy linked to the main schools, our new facilities are fully integrated and sit well within their respective campuses.  Our design was tailored to our needs, so having this turnkey option available to us has proven invaluable.  These new additions not only offer value for money but come with the ability to be reused across other Glasgow schools as our city develops and evolves.  The Council would like to express its thanks to everyone involved.”

Our team are also looking at the possibility of working alongside the pupils and teachers at within the Glasgow Schools estate to create multi-sensory community garden facilities that will include scented and colourful plants, a water feature and wind chimes for pupils to explore all the senses.
