Eight engineering graduates, 13 engineering apprentices and six employers have been shortlisted for the 2023 Young Engineers Awards.

Falling in CIBSE’s 125th Anniversary year, the 2023 awards comprising CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year, CIBSE Employer of the Year and CIBSE Apprentice of the Year, perfectly encapsulate CIBSE’s 125 theme ‘Inspire the next generation’.

The Apprentice of the Year award, now in its third year, acknowledges the invaluable contribution played by apprentices and allows recognition for this route into the industry.

Entrants for the award, which is split into two categories – Technical Apprentice (Level 3-4) and Degree Apprentice (level 5-7) - were required to submit short video presentations on the topics: Why is teamwork in building services important? (Technician level 3-4), and What do you think are the priorities for building services engineers in the next five years? (Degree apprentice level 5-6).

The judges were overwhelmed by the quality and amount of applicants for and said: "The future of building services engineering has never been in a better place, and with the Apprentice of the Year, this is clearly evident."

The shortlisted apprentices are joined by eight newly graduated engineers shortlisted for the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year award.

Running for over 25 years, the Graduate of the Year award is one of the most sought-after accolades for young building services engineers and was first won by current CIBSE President Kevin Mitchell.

The shortlisted Graduates will be challenged to show off their presentation skills in front of a panel of industry judges and an audience, on the topic: How can we inspire engineers to work holistically and collaboratively to deliver high-performance buildings?

Equally as important as the young engineers shortlisted, are the companies who support and develop them. The six companies shortlisted for Employer of the Year have each demonstrated how they nurture, encourage and boost the development of their early years engineers.

The award is split into three categories for small, medium and large companies, together with an overall winner. Employers were asked to demonstrate how they place young engineers at the centre of their business and invest in their career progression with clear strategies for recruiting, nurturing and empowering them.

The judges said: ‘This years Employer of the Year was packed full of employers who really care about the sector and promoting talent, whether that’s through accredited training schemes, creating their own college, promoting in-house talent or training on the job.’

The Young Engineers awards collectively shine a spotlight on the pool of new talent and future leaders who are vital to the future of our industry, while also celebrating those who champion, mentor and nurture them.

Winners will be unveiled on 11 October, at the Young Engineers Awards event at RIBA London, in partnership with CIBSE Patrons, and sponsored by ACV, Ideal Heating, Lochinvar, Swegon and Viega.
