Committee seeks views on Social Housing quality

The Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee wants to hear from social housing tenants in England about their views and experiences regarding the condition of their homes and the service provided by landlords.

In this inquiry, MPs are examining the quality of social housing, the adequacy of the regulatory regime, how effectively residents’ complaints are handled, and the proposals in the Government’s Social Housing White Paper to make housing providers more accountable to tenants.

Clive Betts MP, Chair of the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee, said: “We are keen to hear directly from people who live in social housing. The survey includes questions on whether tenants feel satisfied with the condition of their home; whether their landlord has been responsive to calls to fix issues such as mould or pests; and about tenants’ experiences of complaining to their landlords or to the Housing Ombudsman.

“In our evidence hearings so far, we have heard housing providers suggest the majority of tenants are satisfied with the service they receive. We’ve also heard some direct first-hand testimony from people who have described suffering appalling conditions in their homes and who have experienced inadequate responses from their landlords. We hope that the answers we receive from this survey will give the Committee a greater sense of the issues tenants face in social housing.”

The next session of the LUHC Committee’s social housing inquiry is on Tuesday 19 April (from 4pm) with evidence from Richard Blakeway, the Housing Ombudsman, and from Jonathan Walters, Deputy Chief Executive of the Regulator of Social Housing.

The LUHC’s inquiry is examining concerns about the quality of social housing, with a focus on the ability of the Regulator of Social Housing and the Housing Ombudsman to identify and address problems. The inquiry is also focussing on the proposals in the Government’s social housing White Paper aimed at improving the regulatory regime.
