The Mayor of London officially opened London Underground’s Grimshaw-designed Northern Line Extension on 20 September.
The Northern Line Extension is a major extension to the London Underground network through the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea regeneration area, currently being transformed into a prestigious central residential and business district.
It will act as a catalyst for growth within the city, and provides a crucial link between new areas of development and existing residential areas within an inner-city district of south London. It is already home to the new American Embassy, New Covent Garden Market, the redeveloped Battersea Power Station and a new linear park.

Grimshaw’s designs for the 3.2 km rail extension provide two new underground stations at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms, a residential oversite development (OSD) at Nine Elms, two new ventilation shaft head houses in Kennington and new cross passages at Kennington Station.
“After an incredible effort from the huge number of people who worked on this project,” said Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
“The two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station are the first new stations on the Northern line for 80 years. They will hugely improve connectivity between these two areas and the rest of London and play a major part in the capital’s recovery from the pandemic by supporting thousands of new jobs, homes and businesses.”
