Development leads way for environmentally friendly living

Sustainable living is increasingly topping the list of priorities when searching for a new home with 92% of UK adults citing a sustainable community as important when deciding where to live.

As well as the greener footprint and feeling good about where you live, eco-friendly living can offer lower utility costs.

One residential development which is leading the way for eco-friendly apartment living is The Keel in Liverpool’s city centre.

Located on a private quay at Queen’s Dock, build-to-rent (BTR) development, The Keel, has undergone a range of positive changes and launched a number of initiatives that allow its residents to live sustainably and give back to worthy causes, both locally and internationally.

The former HMRC office building, which has just undergone an extensive renovation to refurbish its communal areas and create co-working spaces, has implemented a comprehensive series of green initiatives to help and encourage its residents to live in a more environmentally friendly way.

One such initiative is The Keel’s new green electricity heat and hot water tariff which will reduce the building’s yearly carbon footprint.

By installing solar panels on the North and South faces of the building and fitting LED lightbulbs throughout the facility, The Keel has also reduced its energy usage by half.

Additionally, by making a monthly contribution to offset its carbon emissions via its gas provider, the site’s net carbon is now zero.

The Keel has partnered with global utilities company and energy management provider, Amber Energy, to donate funds and give hundreds of people in Africa access to power through their Power2Africa campaign. Launched in 2017, Power2Africa uses 100% of the funds donated to help give hundreds of people access to clean power with The Keel having so far donated £3,434.60.

Residents are also encouraged to drop off food once a month at the development’s food donation point in the lobby, which is then taken to a local foodbank and help support those in need around Liverpool.

By monitoring the market, The Keel has been able to understand and establish what renters are looking for. The initiatives the development has put in place help residents to live an environmentally friendly and sustainable life.

Joseph Cooper, General Manager at The Keel, commented: “We want everyone to enjoy life at The Keel, and an important part of that is being sustainable and helping create a greener future. Our residents care about the impact of their actions and we really listened to them to make sure their experience, and the community we have created here, reflects that.

“Living an environmentally friendly and socially conscious life is on the rise, as it rightly should be, and The Keel has undertaken these changes and initiatives to help people achieve their desire of living this way. We’re proud to be taking these steps to lead the industry forward and I personally can’t wait to make more changes to help further our sustainability.”

Steve Glew, Account Director at amber energy said “We’re delighted to be working with The Keel. Their determination to drive towards a greener future is clear, and it's great to see them pushing their sector forwards when it comes to sustainability. Their residents’ contribution to Power 2 Africa is helping to deliver incredibly impactful green energy projects in some of the most deprived communities in rural Africa."
