One of the UK’s most prestigious flower shows debuts a multi-award-winning installation built using sustainable materials which cut CO2 by up to 80%

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)’s Flower Show at Tatton Park was even greener this year thanks to new, ultra-low-carbon construction materials.

Construction industry veterans, CCP and Cemfree, have teamed up with award-nominated artist and designer, Emilie Bausager. Donating CO2-busting cement-free blocks and mortar helps Bausager’s music-inspired Rehearse Garden hit all the right sustainability notes.

Created in honour of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, the installation netted her the People’s Choice Award, the Silver judge’s award, and a nomination for Young Garden Designer of the Year.

Emilie Bausager works and lives in Denmark, with clients across the UK and Europe. Formally trained as an artist, she views the garden as a sensory installation focusing on the sculptural qualities of the brutalist walls contrasting soft, textural planting.

Shooting Star support over 700 children and their families across Surrey and London. Their two sites, Shooting Star House in Hampton and Christopher’s in Guildford, provide specialist care to help make every moment count for children with life-limiting conditions.

CCP’s cement-free Greenbloc and Cemfree’s pioneering low-carbon mortar have allowed Bausager to realise her vision without a hefty carbon footprint. This is the first time entire structures have been created using these innovative materials, which can cut up to 80% of a project’s embodied CO2.

Adam Gittins from Cemrfee, part of the DB Group (Holdings) Ltd says: “Finding ways to help the construction industry tackle CO2 emissions is an important challenge. Here, we’ve proven a lower-carbon future is possible, while also helping a talented artist support a fantastic charity. Highly visible community projects like this are helping get the word out about climate change.”
