The winners of Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) Built Environment Awards 2019 were announced at a gala black-tie dinner held as part of the Association’s Annual Conference and Exhibition at Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel.

CABE’s Built Environment Awards 2019 recognise excellence and achievements within the field of the Built Environment and Building Engineering and are judged by a panel that comprises of industry experts who provide a wealth of knowledge over a wide-ranging field of expertise.

Presented by CABE President Ant Burd, the awards covered a range of diverse projects over five award categories – New Build, Maintenance or Refurbishment, Sustainability, Preservation and Conservation, and Extension.

The eagerly-awaited New Build award went to Gateshead Council and Groundwork, North East & Cumbria which was recognised for its outstanding work at Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre. In the Maintenance or Refurbishment Award category, Onyx Solar won for its work in improving the energy efficiency of Bell Works in New Jersey. The company also won the Sustainability Award for their work at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The Preservation and Conversation Award went to Ardmore Construction for its exemplary conversion of the Grade II* listed Ram Brewery. The final Built Environment award of the night in the Extension category went to Gateshead Council for PROTO: The Emerging Technology Centre, Europe’s first centre for emerging technologies and digital innovation.

CABE’s Peter Stone Award was also presented to Robin Nicholson, Partner at Cullinan Studio, for his significant contribution to the advancement of building engineering. The Gold Service Award went to Billy Gillespie for his enthusiasm and passion for sharing his knowledge and experience amongst CABE members. The final award of the night, in the form of an Honorary Fellowship, went to the Reverend Kevin Fear, Health and Safety Strategy Lead at CITB. Rev Fear is leading the way in mental health issues in the construction industry.

Commenting on the awards, Dr Gavin Dunn, CEO of CABE, said: “We are hugely proud to honour all these achievements and would like to congratulate the award winners and all those who were highly commended. Our Built Environment Awards are once again an excellent opportunity to celebrate good practice across our industry.”

More than 200 guests enjoyed a gala dinner followed by a captivating and highly amusing address by the evening's host - writer, broadcaster, actor and former MP Gyles Brandreth.

Entry to the awards is currently open to an organisation, individual or project where there has been substantial involvement of a CABE member. The subject of the nomination for the award will have demonstrated a range of building engineering skills through invention, research, design, education or other related activity and has produced a leading edge, innovative and exemplary project which was completed in the previous year.
