Belgian software company Hysopt has launched a new version of its unique cloud-based design and simulation software for large heating and cooling installations. With district heating set to play a key role in the UK’s transition towards a Net Zero Carbon future, Hysopt’s latest release focuses on design and optimisation for city-wide heat networks. New features make it easier and faster than ever before for engineers to create and simulate accurate, hydraulically optimised designs, taking into consideration complex combinations of low carbon energy sources and end building scenarios.

Ban on gas boilers in new homes from 2025

With £320 million of funding for the development of district heating via the Heat Network Investment Project; the planned introduction of a new “Future Homes Standard” which will include a ban on the installation of gas boilers in new homes from 2025; and the acceleration of a UK Heat Network Market Framework on the back of last year’s Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) report, there has never been more opportunity for the heat network sector in the UK.

‘Therefore we are delighted to help engineers in order to design systems that are more efficient, eliminate the oversizing of pipes and provide deep engineering and commercial insights into possible optimisations to reduce upfront capital cost and ongoing energy and operational costs for medium-sized and city scale heat networks’, says Chris Davis, UK Sales Manager of Hysopt.

Energy savings of 20 to 70 percent

‘In the new version of our software, we make it a lot easier to design district heating networks and simulate their operation. For example, it is possible to draw heat networks for cities and other large areas on top of the city map. The software then automatically calculates the length of the pipes that must be laid, making the design process quick and easy. But that is not the only new feature. The software also automatically calculates pressure drops, water temperatures, and so on for each building. These are just a few of the new options,’ says Davis.

‘Actually the software creates a digital model of a district heating network very quickly. This way, the users of our software have all the tools at their disposal to design, optimise and simulate multiple variations of district heating networks. Such a digital model is also very useful for future updates and the further livelihood of the installations. Users immediately see their potential energy cost savings. This energy saving varies between 20 and 70 percent. In the majority of projects where our software has been used for the hydraulic optimisation of district heating networks, the payback time was less than 2 years, ”concludes Chris Davis.

About Hysopt
Hysopt is a spin-off from the Belgian University of Antwerp. With its cloud software, Hysopt optimises the performance of HVAC installations on a large scale in Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Hysopt does this by supporting developers, installation companies and engineering firms with powerful, user-friendly design software and services. Hysopt provides more insight into the design and the final system performance of hydraulic installations. This way they want to make the HVAC sector more sustainable. Energy savings generally fluctuate between 10 and 50%. Savings can be even higher with new construction projects.
