A Hereford builders’ merchant has gone the extra yard by completing his own self-designed half marathon to fundraise for the charity that helped him in his battle against illness.
Steve Collins, yard supervisor at Gibbs & Dandy Hereford, ran the half-marathon recently to fundraise for Prostate Cancer UK, the support charity that helped him following his diagnosis.
His half marathon hard yards have paid off handsomely with Steve raising over £1,000 for his chosen charity.
Despite undergoing major surgery, Steve was determined to get back to work as quickly as possible and back into his training routine, so devised the half marathon challenge to give himself a target to aim at.
The positive spirit he displayed during his recovery continued into the half marathon with Steve bursting through his very own finishing line with a time of 2 hours and 6 minutes.
Steve said: “The run was quite a challenge, but I enjoyed getting out into the bright and frosty Herefordshire countryside for what was a perfect day for running.
“After undertaking a lot of training and battling various health hurdles along the way, I just wanted to don my running shoes and do my best.
“I'm extremely thankful for all the support I received during my illness and wanted to give something back by raising money for Prostate Cancer UK and helping those fighting the disease like myself.
“I’ve raised over £1,000 and counting, so a big thank you to everyone who’s donated, such as the staff team at the Gibbs & Dandy Hereford branch.”

Steve is also participating in a clinical trial in the UK for the next 5 years which will evaluate how aspirin can stop the return of the disease and has been undertaking the trial for the past year.
